Individuals who endured sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have voiced renewed hope after their initial meeting with the new Pope at the Vatican.

The board president, heading Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so soon in his leadership sent a strong message about his dedication to tackling the problem.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Policy Pushed

The organization is advocating for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any priest who confesses to or is found guilty of abusing a minor. This approach has been implemented in the US.

The Pope acknowledged that there is "resistance in certain regions of the world" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is resistance," they remarked.

Inherited Issue

The new Pope, who took the position in spring, has inherited this persistent problem that has plagued the Church for decades.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an historic summit on paedophilia within the institution and revisions to church laws to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For the representative, who prefers they/them pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the measure is deeply meaningful. The Canadian activist shared they were abused by a priest who was subsequently transferred between various churches.

"We trust this will establish the direction for his papacy, because we aim to collaborate with him," they stated. "We have the common objective, we want to eliminate clergy abuse."

Significant Meeting

Seven representatives of the organization, which represents victims and advocates from over thirty nations, met with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The meeting, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "mostly listened to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was characterized as "quite empathetic" when hearing the story of a woman victimized at a church-run institution for native youth in North America.

Hickey noted the Pope was "tender" about their personal story and seemed "very humble, funny, and very down to earth."

"Survivors have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," they commented. "I believed like he was genuine, realistic, and receptive and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Changes

The group is hoping that changes to church regulations will enable the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy globally.

They have consulted specialists and gathered documents that they plan to submit to Pope Leo.

"He appeared interested in looking at it," they remarked.

Accountability Emphasized

A recent church-ordered document emphasized the "importance of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or removal of religious officials or personnel in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The report also noted that victims consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for bishops and senior officials to be held accountable for negligence and cover-up."

Moving Forward

Hickey shared they informed the Pope at the beginning of their meeting: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the encounter, they voiced optimism for future change.

"We understand it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, coming together and building a connection and continuing to build that relationship is a move in the correct path," they stated.

They added that they shared with the pontiff: "Even though it's a difficult period, I feel like we can change how the narrative concludes - he appreciated that."
