The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if progress is being made or collapsing.
Matteo's Unexpected Return
One individual kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his parent club were advocating for him to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo forced a rethink. Cancellieri arrived originally when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. Uncovering His Best Role
It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities.
